Synopsis
 

Mr. Qiu is the proprietor of the Moon Palace, and also the director’s father. Extremely fond of drinking, Mr. Qiu is a connoisseur of liquor with his own spectacular theories. The patrons of the restaurant are usually friends of his, among whom there are quite a few drinking enthusiasts. After having a couple of drinks, the banter gets more and more lively; once everyone is duly intoxicated, drunken singing erupts. It’s like that the three local rivers merge into a pond of liquor, and everyone is having a good swim in it carefree. 

           

The director’s fourth, fifth and eldest aunts are also stakeholders of the Moon Palace. The three sisters are playing cards while receiving the interview. The topics range widely from soap opera gossip to political scandals, unsophisticated, vivacious, and realistic. Aside from the drinking table, the card table is also an important platform for interpersonal communication at this place. The next generation, who grow up in such an infectious environment, inherit the liveliness, yet somehow exhibit traits of narcissism and sentimentalism.

     

Sitting around the drinking table, Mr. Qiu and his friends joke about birth, aging, illness and death —life’s ultimate destination, which they discuss with great relish, even yearning. It’s not that they don’t love life. They love life and death as much. Will such a well of emotions pass on to their descendants naturally, generation after generation?

邱先生是广寒宫的主人,颇好杯中物,对酒也有一套精彩的见解。酒楼的食客多是邱先生的朋友,不乏爱酒之人。酒过三巡,谈话中逐现生动;酒酣之后,引吭高歌;唐人李白诗酒如注,川剧名角王大爷即兴表演《太白醉写》,与诗仙同醉……不一样的表现,犹如三江化酒,大家畅游其中。

 

四孃、五孃、大孃亦是广寒宫的主人,三姐妹一边打牌一边接受访问——从肥皂剧到政治八卦……朴素、生动、真实。在这个地方,牌桌是酒桌之外人们用于交流的重要平台。在这种富于感染力的环境里成长起来的下一代人同样地生动,却多少有些自恋与矫情。

 

酒桌上,邱先生和他的朋友们玩笑般畅聊着生老病死的终点,津津乐道甚至带着憧憬。其实他们不是不爱生活,他们只是同样地爱着死亡——这种充沛的情感会一直很自然地代代相传吗?

Director's Note
 

This is a truly unconventional documentary. The restaurant Moon Palace is Mr. Qiu's family business. By simply recording what he sees in an unpretentious way and employing vaudeville-like dazzling editing methods, the director gives his account of the people and events relevant to this place. In a garrulous manner, the director delivers to his audience his personal rumination and revelations that are a direct result of deep observations and devotion to the mundane. The multitude of narrative threads in his film may disconcert the viewers at first, but under the delicate arrangement of the director, these threads interweave, collide, and fuse together, just like the Minjiang River, which is tempestuous under the surface, carrying an intense odor of the mundane in its endless flow. 这是一部非常规的纪录片。“广寒宫”大酒楼是邱先生的家族产业,导演通过平实的镜头记录和杂耍般花哨的剪辑,讲述了与之有关联的诸多人和事。导演将他对日常生活的深入观察和热烈投入后的若有所思与恍然大悟以一种絮絮叨叨的方式呈现给了观众。影片中所铺陈的令人感到散漫芜杂的诸多线索,在导演别有用心的调度下,相互交织、碰撞、融合,就像那暗流奔涌的岷江水,在滔滔不绝之中,弥漫着一股挥之不去的世俗烟火气。(吕欣《牛角尖里的桃花源》)

Director's Note
 

Qiu Jiongjiong's 2007 short film Ode to Joy is a complicated yet terse rendition of the symphony of the same title in his unique style. The nostalgia-inducing use of black and white, skillful montage, Sichuan opera’s innate charm and its real situation have endowed this 31-minute short film with a tight narrative rhythm and a delightful plot-line. Thesold friends and experiences, as well as sorrows behind fun and laughters due to the inevitable passing of time. (Ode to the Past by Wen Chuan)

邱炯炯2007年的短片作品《彩排记》,是一曲繁复而不拖沓的邱氏风味欢乐颂。影片中怀旧的黑白色调、熟练的蒙太奇剪辑、以及川剧本身的魅力与现实境遇,使得这部片长31分钟的短片作品一方面有着相当紧凑的叙事节奏和颇具喜感的情节画面,另一方面也有着超越个人意义的丰富内涵。通过祖父生前表演片段、新一代演员的台前幕后以及寻访老一辈演员这些明暗线索的交织安排,使作品彻底远离了家庭录像的俗套,让人真切地感受到了一种对故人故事的柔情蜜意,以及嬉笑背后因时光流逝而带来的忧伤。(文川《写给过往的欢乐颂》)

Director's Note
 

As a painter, Qiu Jiongjiong's works are mostly blurry and indistinct portraits. Qiu's sitters are  usually frights at first glance. Upon closer examination, however, they start to exude the romantic quality of a fairy. Much like his paintings, Portrait of Mr. Huang also lays its focus on “character portraiture”. The sensational cases Qiu puts forth in the film are the mist or dim lights artist Qiu Jiongjiong creates on his canvas, which only serve to highlight the character. Mr. Huang delivers his accounts in a manner of understatement, like the stories he told are just trivial Absorbed by his narratives, I found myself back in the childhood, listening all ears with cheeks cupped in my palms out of deep admiration for an outstanding hero.

 

The nostalgia of Qiu Jiongjiong is vivid and romantic, rich in details and casual amicability. The methods of this film reveals Qiu Jiongjiong’s intuition as an “author”: He does not merely lay out the characters and events; he reconstructs them, thereby ridding them of the one-dimensional monotony to achieve complexity and subtlety. In this way, the film easily goes beyond the specific purpose of storytelling and builds up a distinct ambience. This intrinsic quality courses throughout Qiu Jiongjiong's films. He fixes on his elders a soulful gaze, listening to them in an intimate and relaxed manner. Meanwhile, the romantic and liberated temperament of his film is the emblem of his affinity with the early classics from a thousand years ago. (The Wonder of Qiu Jiongjiong by Yang Cheng)

作为画家的邱炯炯,其作品多为肖像画,画面恍兮惚兮,画中的人物乍看让人惊惧,细观 又觉如童话般浪漫。和他的画类似,《黄老老拍案》的重点也落在“人物形象”上,那些耸人听闻的案件就像他在画布上涂抹出的雾霭或者幽暗的光线,只是人物的衬托。黄老老对这些案件娓娓道来,轻描淡写,好像它们不算什么事,伴着他的讲述,我仿佛回到了童年,竖耳捧腮,仰视着一位经历不凡的英雄。

邱炯炯的怀旧是生动而浪漫的,充满细节的,亲切随性的。影片的手法显示了他强对“创 作”的自觉:不是简单呈现人和事(素材),而是重新结构它们,使之摆脱单调和平面化,变得复杂而微妙,这样一来,影片便超越了具体的叙事,创造出一种独特的氛围。邱炯炯在几部影片中表现出的趣味浑然天成。他看长辈们的目光深情款款,聆听的姿态如此贴近而放松,而他影片呈现的浪漫、逍遥的气质,又显示了他和远至千年的古典的亲近。(杨城《邱炯炯惊奇》)

Synopsis
 

In the night, he was the flamboyant, dignified, mean, timid, malicious, snobbish, bashful, unfortunate, amorous, matriarchal and bullheaded Madame Bilan de Linphel. In the day, he was Fan Qihui, a talented tailor and fashion designer in the capital city. Fan was a fast talker and a regular visitor of the gay strongholds — parks and bathhouses — in search of romances, encounters, flirtation, sex, dinner dates… Fan said he was born to love men. 

 

In Fan's eyes, his parents were unfortunate; his childhood, insecure and boring. When he grew up, Fan funded his journey to Guangzhou on the meager income he earned as tailor. He went to realize his dream: to be a highly sought-after “prostitute”… Indeed, he ran across some men who had left their indelible marks on him, whether it was in Beijing or in Guangzhou. He was young at the moment.

一襲如畫的長裙,紮著一朵白色玫瑰的巨大的髮套,足足二十公分的高跟鞋……

 

碧浪達夫人眼角掛著混合了厚厚睫毛膏的黑色眼淚在燈光昏暗的酒吧裏低吟淺唱,縱聲高歌——從白光(四十年代的歌后)到閆秋霞(白派京韻大鼓傳人),從調侃仰慕者送來的不菲小費到對臺下驕傲女人的尖酸與不屑,從沈浸在回憶中的溫暖歌唱到絕望的跳大神式的嬉笑怒罵……

 

嘈雜的環境中,舞臺是她的——這個小小的舞臺是屬於這位華麗的、莊嚴的、刻薄的、膽怯的、惡毒的、勢利的、羞澀的、不幸的、風情萬種的、母儀天下的、冥頑不靈的碧浪達夫人的!

Director's Note
 

Madame Fan Qihui had two identities: the talkative tailor and the debauchery Bilan de Linphel. By becoming the dissolute Bilan de Linphel who exemplified the pop style, the tailor lamented his awkward and inappropriate identity. In the darkness of the stage, the desolate Bilan de Linphel was the tailor's elegy.

 

Madame is definitely an exercise of subtraction — documenting is executed with the most extreme method. Besides the footage of live performance, the film is composed of nothing but interviews, shunning the minor factors of the subject’s reality. The film’s black-and-white tone is an even more obvious evidence of subtraction. The director manages to avoid the ambiguity that could have been caused by the interference of color by choosing a monochromic world. The texts and the images are tailor-made to mirror and shed light on each other. (MADAME by He Jia)

姑奶奶樊其辉有两重身份,健谈的裁缝,浪荡的碧浪达夫人。通过极具波普味道,放浪形骸的碧浪达夫人,裁缝哀悼着他自己不合时宜的尴尬身份。舞台上黑暗悲伤的碧浪达,是裁缝的挽歌。

 

《姑奶奶》的记录手法无疑在做减法,直奔最极端的记录方式去了,除了歌曲演唱的记录,就只剩赤裸裸的访谈,屏蔽了人物旁枝末节的其他现实。黑白影调更是减法,消减掉色彩可能造成的多义,只留下一个单色世界。文本和对象度身订做,互为镜像,映照了对方。(何佳《MADAME》)

Director's Note
 

Qiu Jiongjiong's film My Mother's Rhapsody is a continuation of his formalist pursuits. As a result of his cultivation in the arts and in the spirit of exploration, this film makes an attempt at the use of complicated editing methods. All the techniques used in the filmmaking, including setting the tone for the editing with the score, various forms of coordination between sound and images, the collage of multiple art forms, as well as shots and reverse shots of a single person from different time and space, etc., strengthen the film’s formalistic quality by keeping it away from realism, and, on a higher level, probe the nature of documentary — authenticity. Concurrently, the film downplays the narrative arc in exchange for its focus on character portraiture. With the help of the footage of Granny, her narratives, and the big family, powerful and moving affection swells gradually, whereby the film's significance to the public sphere eventually reveals itself. 邱炯炯在影片《萱堂闲话录》里继续了他形式主义的追求,基于丰富的艺术修为和积极的探索精神,这部影片尝试了复杂的剪辑手段。以音乐为剪辑奠定基调,加之不同形式的声画配合与多种艺术形式的拼贴杂糅,以及不同时空中单人镜头的正反打等技巧,强化影片脱离现实的形式感,在更深的层次上探讨了纪录片的真实性本质。同时影片淡化叙事的戏剧性,却强化人物形象,在奶奶、奶奶的讲述和关于这个大家庭的画面中,动人而又有力量的亲情愈加饱满起来,影片的公共意义也在其间逐渐渗透了出来。(李莉《形式主义者邱炯炯》)

Synopsis
 

One evening in the 1980s, Qiu Fu, a leading clown-role actor in 20th-century Sichuan opera, is killed in an accident and must reluctantly set off for the Ghost City under escort of two underworld officials.  Along the way, he meets old friends.  As they recall the past, earthly scenes creep into the mists of the underworld.

 

Qiu Fu’s life in opera unfolds against the backdrop of a secular upheaval. The "New-New" Troupe in which he grows up and learns his trade is affiliated with the military. As power shifts, the troupe is cast loose to wander rootlessly through a broken world. Despite this unsettled destiny, shaped by war, famine and political turmoil, Qiu Fu becomes one of the finest clown-role performers in Sichuan opera. And yet, one day he finds himself clapped in a pigsty as a political revolution rages outside.

某个夜晚,阴间的差人接引刚刚去世的丘福前往地府。路上,他巧遇在此卖酒的故人,他们推杯换盏,插科打诨,不住地回望对岸的人间……

故事从上世纪初的四川开始。当时正值军阀混战,戏迷麻儿走投无路参军,意外成为少将,并组建了自己的戏班。八岁的丘福入班,在棍棒下学戏,在枪杆下唱戏。麻儿春风得意时,戏班走红,丘福成长为名角。麻儿失势隐退,戏班渐渐衰落,丘福整日流连于鸦片烟馆。后来麻儿干脆将戏班交予新政府,随即消失。时代变迁,丘福积极戒烟、编排新戏、教授学员,最终却被关进自己亲手修建的“猪公馆”里……

戏班在剧变中兴衰,艺人踉跄地边走边唱。丘福在地府门口喝下忘却记忆的孟婆汤,百年无解的剧痛,好像从未发生过。

Synopsis
 

The film recounts a 30-year chapter of China’s mid-20th-century history through the story of Mr. Zhang Xianchi and the interacting forms of theatrical fiction and documentary autobiography. Born into a Nationalist (KMT) family in the 1930s, Zhang was a progressive young "leftist" and Communist Party supporter, then, after the founding of the New China in 1949, was dubbed a counter-revolutionary "rightist" - a public enemy - and jailed in 1957 for twenty-three years. Mr. Zhang Belives was selected by Locarno in 2015.

取材自右派张先痴的自传《格拉古轶事》,出身于一个国民党家庭的张先痴在四十年代成长为一个进步的年轻的“左派”和共产党的坚定支持者,直到一九五七年他被划入反革命“右派”阵营而锒铛入狱……影片通过展现主人公的个人经历而反刍中国20世纪30年代到50年代的一段历史。本片曾入围2015年洛迦诺电影节。

QIU Jiongjiong

QIU Jiongjiong (born 1977) is an active contemporary artist and filmmaker in China. As an artist, his works have been exhibited all over the world (for a detailed curriculum vitae please see attached). As a filmmaker, his experiments with cinematic language and aesthetics in documentary film-making have earned him a reputation as one of China's most important independent directors. His experimental/documentary feature MR. ZHANG BELIEVES (2015), supported by a Sundance Post-Production Grant, premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival and has been screened internationally. JIAO MA TANG HUI (A NEW OLD PLAY) is his first fiction feature.
