Synopsis

Putting himself in front of the camera, Chinese film student Kai Luo attempts to reveal the complexities of his friendship with Hal Rawlings, an older African American spare change newspaper vendor he met upon his arrival in the U.S. As they reenact the events that happened a year ago, both begin to 29 with the authenticity and ethical issues of the project. However, no documentary form can claim moral superiority.

Director's Note

Since my arrival in the U.S., Hal has shared invaluable insights about this country and its society, sometimes offering guidance and support. However, at other times, our relationship has felt complex, even exploitative, as if rooted in a fascination with the exotic.

Holy Ghost Conversation emerged from a place of introspection. Initially conceived as a reenactment of selected events between me and Hal, the project gradually led me to realize that my pursuit and obsession with "truth" were continually constrained by my own ethical considerations. I felt guilty and I questioned the true purpose of this film. What kind of image should I use to represent myself, and how should I represent others? These questions have continued to trouble me.
